James Osborne - Para cyclist

His adaptive journey began at NEHSA with adaptive skiing.

In 2008, I lost my lower right leg and left toes from injuries suffered from frostbite. From the early days of my hospitalization, I knew that activity and exercise were keys to my recovery. In 2010, I returned to skiing — taking lessons at NEHSA.

A couple of years later, with many lessons at NEHSA, and a Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) equipment grant, skiing felt like I remembered it. The confidence I gained while learning to ski again with the adaptive instructors at NEHSA propelled me to try other sports activities and cycling hooked me.

This October, thanks to my CAF support and my NEHSA roots, I will participate in my third Million Dollar Challenge, a 640-mile fundraising ride from San Francisco to San Diego. Some 140 riders will participate and I will be among the 25 or so challenged athletes that ride each year.

We are born to move, be active and exercise, and part of that birthright is a responsibility to ensure accessibility for everyone. Without NEHSA and CAF, I wouldn’t be where I am today (one of 25 adaptive cyclists to ride all 640 miles.

These two organizations mean the world to me — the miles of smiles I have been part of and seen on the snow and the pavement is immeasurable. I cannot imagine where I would be today without the sports/ activities I love.

In order to celebrate the immense gratitude I have for NEHSA and CAF I will embark on a 110-mile ride around Lake Sunapee on October 1st (rain date October 8th) that will happen in 22-mile segments. The last 3 are open to anyone who may want to join me (James) for the ride. Departures take off from Sunapee State Park at the following times:

10 AM, 12 PM & 2 PM

*Note* this is not a NEHSA-sponsored event, so please remember to have your bicycle tail light functional, water and snacks. If you’re joining James for the ride please be timely.  Email with any questions.
